Overview

The Application for Resilient Communities (“ARC”) has been designed and built in association with London First and business communities to address these and many other issues. It’s a platform and approach for helping urban authorities and business communities understand, anticipate, act and share resilience and response mechanisms to potential crisis and commercial disruption.

The Problem

Businesses big and small are subject to a range of potential crises or commercial disruption. This ranges from terrorist acts like Borough Market, Westminster Bridge or the Manchester Arena; cyber-attacks; transport issues, like strikes or damage and flooding; and, major events such as demonstrations or film premiers.

Where can organisations go for simple, straightforward and accurate information and advice on how to recover? Or, better still, where can they find information on how to minimise the potential impact by preparing in advance?

There is no shortage of high-quality advice from the Cabinet Office, CSSC and academic institutions. In fact, organisations are being bombarded daily with advanced notice of disruption, advice on current fraud activities, current terrorist threats etc. so how do organisations identify information that is relevant to them, like road closures in their area?

The Application for Resilient Communities (“ARC”) has been designed and built in association with London First and business communities to address these and many other issues. It’s a platform and approach for helping urban authorities and business communities understand, anticipate, act and share resilience and response mechanisms to potential crisis and commercial disruption.

What is Resilience and Why Does it Matter?

Resilience is an organisation’s capacity to anticipate and react to change, not only to survive, but also to evolve and become better prepared for future shocks.

It matters because it helps the whole community to anticipate and plan, recover and learn from crisis or commercial disruption. Better still organisations can learn from other organisations and communities by sharing best practice and practical tips.

The Vision and Who Can Use ARC?

Building more resilient communities through collaboration, ARC was developed in association with London First and is used by Business Improvement Districts (“BIDs”), however, it is designed for any group of businesses that can be identified as a community, e.g. Canary Wharf, shopping centres, local authorities and special interest groups across the UK and internationally.

How Does ARC Work?

ARC is an innovative and intuitive approach to building and supporting resilient communities. It uses an app to gain access and contribute to:

A unique, simple tool to assess how resilient an organisation is and how it improves over time.

A collaborative platform for accessing, sharing and commenting on material.

An extensive library of best practices, which is continually growing and changing based on community needs.

Information feeds from public and information providers, including; TfL, Utilities, CSSC, The Cabinet Office, The Mayor's Office and local support groups.

ARC quickly becomes integrated into your working day through a simple and intuitive app which is based on leading and proven behavioural change theory.

What Capabilities Does ARC Have?

ARC has a set of capabilities which have been directly build with the user communities, reflecting what businesses need. These capabilities will continue to evolve as the needs of business communities grow and change over time. The diagram below maps identified “Resilient Behaviours” against the ARC capability set.
